IECEx certification: What it is and why it matters

IECEx certification

IECEx is the IEC System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for Use in Explosive Atmospheres - a globally recognized certification that determines if a product can be used in hazardous or potentially explosive locations. Being IECEx certified allows products to be traded across countries without having to be re-tested and re-certified for every country, with different safety standards. Participating countries in the IECEx Scheme include the majority of countries in Europe, Canada, Australia, Russia, China, United States and South Africa.

Why does that matter?
All electronic equipment has some risk of igniting - simply the combination of flammable substances, oxygen and the electric energy has the possibility of causing an explosion.  If you’re working or spending a lot of time in explosive atmospheres, it’s important to keep your employees safe and healthy and to meet the regulations of your environment. Ensuring you’re using IECEx certified products can help you achieve this.

How do I know if a product is certified?
COMARK has invested in reaching the high level of certification offered by IECEx, and offers IECEx certified panel PCs and displays. Each unit will also have the official 'IECEx' logo on the label, ensuring you can trust that the IECEx certification is in place.

What are explosive atmospheres?
Explosive atmospheres are environments where there is a mixture of dangerous substances with air, under atmospheric conditions, in the form of gases, vapours, mist or dust  in which, after ignition has occurred, combustion spreads to the entire unburned mixture. Think petrol stations, certain types of factories or repair shops, or other industrial environments. If you’re not sure, you can conduct a risk assessment to determine if hazardous areas exist and to then assign zones to those areas.

More details

The IECEx certification consists of four schemes: IECEx Equipment Scheme, IECEx Conformity Mark License, IECEx Services Scheme, and IECEx Certified Persons Scheme. These four schemes are to ensure that every aspect of the products conforms to the IECEx standard, from the quality of the Ex equipment itself to the competency of the personnel who will be handling such equipment in hazardous environments.
